English Classes

English courses are organised in collaboration with well-established international language schools and academies. All programmes are designed to meet the linguistic and organisational standards set by ACELS in Ireland and the British Council in the UK.
Courses are delivered in partnership with an international language academy that has been welcoming students from across Europe for over fifteen years. Programmes are structured across five CEFR levels and include 20 lessons per week (15 hours), ensuring full compliance with the quality and academic standards required by ACELS and the British Council.
The General English course is designed to develop all aspects of the English language and its related sub-skills. These include the four core skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, as well as communicative language skills such as turn-taking and asking for clarification.
Students also work on different types of interaction, including obtaining goods and services and interviewing, alongside broader linguistic competences such as vocabulary range and phonological control. The course aims to integrate the practical use of English with focused work on vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
A wide range of classes and levels ensures that students are placed in groups with learners of a similar ability. This allows all participants to confidently enjoy improving their English in a lively, supportive, and friendly learning environment.

English Course Contents

Students usually attend classes in the morning, following the structure of a General English course. The programme includes 15 hours of English per week, delivered from Monday to Friday and organised into two 90-minute lessons per day.
Classes are limited to a maximum of 15 students, ensuring a focused and supportive learning environment. Courses are available at all levels, from Elementary (A1) to Advanced (C1).
Each class is taught by two teachers, who work alternately and cover different, pre-arranged areas of the syllabus. The first 90-minute session focuses on language in use, with emphasis on vocabulary development and grammar practice. After a short break, the second teacher leads the next 90-minute session, concentrating on conversational skills, including pronunciation, listening, and speaking.
This shared teaching approach provides variety, exposes students to different teaching styles and personalities, and enhances overall engagement. All teaching staff are university graduates and hold recognised TEFL qualifications, ensuring high academic and professional standards.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
They are respected for their expertise, professionalism, and dedication to student development.

Classes run from 09:30 to 13:00, with a 30-minute break at 11:00.
After classes, students have a 60-minute lunch break.
In the afternoon, depending on the programme, students take part in
sports activities, leisure activities, or a
cultural excursion. Students are expected to be ready at the designated times.

The first day at the college differs slightly from the regular schedule.
Students are advised to arrive at 09:00 to allow time for any unforeseen delays,
particularly if they are unfamiliar with local transport routes or timetables.
At 09:30, there will be a short welcome and introduction by the
Camp Manager and the Principal.

Following the introduction, students will sit an assessment test,
which is used to determine their English level and ensure placement in the most appropriate class.

After the assessment, students meet again in the main hall, where a staff member
will explain the college rules and provide other essential information.
Students are then taken on a guided tour of the college.
At the end of the tour, students are allocated to their classes and attend the
second morning lesson until lunchtime.

After lunch, students enrolled in the General English programme take part in a
familiarisation trip, while students on specialised
sports programmes begin their training sessions.

Please note: All students enrolled in the
“Play Sport and Learn English” programme must bring their
training equipment on the first day.

Students participating in the familiarisation trip usually return to the college by
approximately 17:00. For subsequent city-centre excursions,
students staying with host families travel directly home and do not return to the college.

Students on the “Play Sport and Learn English” programme normally finish
training between 17:00 and 17:30.

Students receive all English course materials and
workbooks as part of the programme.

Upon successful completion of the English course, each student is awarded a
Certificate of Attendance.
The certificate confirms the progress achieved and the
level of English attained during the programme.

Extracurricular Activities

Cultural Activities

Complementary cultural activities, held on selected afternoons and evenings, are an integral part of the course and play an important role in developing language skills.

A cultural excursion is organised once per week and normally takes place in the afternoon.

Saturdays are dedicated to a full-day excursion to a destination of historical, cultural, or natural interest.

Evening activities are organised three times per week and may include disco nights, debates, and film evenings.

In addition to classes, students take part in a half-day cultural trip each week. These trips usually visit local attractions such as galleries, museums, sports stadiums, and other popular sites. Students travel with their group leader(s) and one or more ED activity leaders. All admission fees are included.

A full-day excursion is also included each week, typically on Saturdays. Students travel by private coach to places of interest, usually outside the city. All admission fees are included. There are no organised activities on Sundays, as many groups, host families, or friends prefer to arrange their own plans.

Evening activities are organised several times per week and may include discos, party nights, karaoke, quiz nights, treasure hunts, sports and games competitions, movie nights, barbecues, and more. Activities generally take place between 20:00 and 22:00, although times may vary depending on the activity and the age group of the students.

The activities programme allows students to experience local culture and heritage in a fun and relaxed environment, while continuing to develop their English language skills. This informal and social aspect of the programme plays a key role in improving communication skills and gives students from different nationalities the opportunity to connect outside the classroom. Many of the friendships formed with ED last a lifetime.

College/Residential Accommodation

Host Family Accommodation

Read more about:

Boarding schools offer an alternative to the host family option for students who wish to immerse themselves fully in the school experience. Boarding provides a community-oriented way of life and is particularly suited to students who are outgoing, sporty, and adaptable. It offers a comprehensive academic and extracurricular environment designed to help each student develop their full all-round potential.

The ED campus is a self-contained community that gives students a healthy degree of independence and freedom to explore, while maintaining a safe and secure environment. Student well-being is central to our boarding provision. With a generous staff-to-student ratio, we provide 24-hour supervision and care within a happy, well-structured setting. Staff actively foster a friendly, lively, and family-like atmosphere so that students feel comfortable, confident, and supported throughout their stay.

The college accommodates residential students on-site, mainly in comfortable double or triple rooms. All accommodation provided for language school students is of high quality. Bedrooms are located close to modern wash and toilet facilities or include en-suite shower rooms. Each student is provided with a wardrobe, drawers, desk, and chair.

The catering facilities offer a variety of hot and cold meals, along with a wide selection of snacks. The dining area is open before school and during break times, ensuring students have regular access to nutritious food throughout the day.

Students attending programmes with ED normally stay with carefully selected host families. All host families are inspected and approved by our accommodation officers, who maintain regular contact with each family throughout the student’s stay. Families are conveniently located close to the colleges and many have years of experience hosting international students.

Accommodation is provided on a full-board basis, including a packed lunch from Monday to Saturday.

Students usually share a bedroom with another student of a similar age but a different nationality. Wherever possible, and unless specifically requested otherwise, there is only one student of each nationality per family.

Students typically travel to classes each day by public transport, such as bus, DART (suburban train), LUAS (tram), or Tube, depending on the location. Private transfers can also be arranged at an additional cost.

Living with a host family provides students with valuable insight into Irish or British family life. Daily interaction with host families plays a key role in developing language skills and building confidence in real-life communication.

All staff at ED are committed to providing students with the highest standard of education during their stay. We encourage and motivate students to work diligently so they can effectively improve their English language proficiency.

Our experienced teaching staff are well trained and highly qualified in their subject areas. They remain up to date with the latest methodologies in teaching English as a foreign language and combine academic excellence with a sensitive and responsive approach to each student’s individual needs, talents, and potential.

All ED teachers are university graduates and hold recognised qualifications in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). They are widely respected for their expertise, professionalism, and dedication.

The activities programme allows students to experience cultural heritage in a fun and relaxed environment, while continuing to develop their English skills. This informal and social aspect of the programme plays a key role in improving communication and gives students from different nationalities the opportunity to interact outside the classroom. Many of the friendships formed through ED last a lifetime.

Students travel to activity and excursion locations with their group leader(s) and one or more ED activity leaders.

All students are fully supervised by ED activity leaders. During the day, students participate in supervised classes, training sessions, activities, and excursions. In the evening, students also take part in a structured programme of supervised evening activities.

For added peace of mind, all students have access to 24-hour emergency assistance throughout their stay.

The Test of Interactive English (TIE) is a recognised English Language Examination designed specifically to meet the needs of all students coming to Ireland to learn and improve their English. TIE is designed to assess learners’ communicative and interactive skills in both predictable and spontaneous situations.
It assesses the students’ level of language ability in speaking and writing, with the receptive skills (reading and listening) being tested indirectly through preparation for the test and through the skills required to interact effectively during the test.

The test is task-based with the content chosen by each individual learner and can, therefore, be used to assess learners with the following needs and motivations:

  • Learners of English for general purposes;
  • Learners of English for business, professional or academic purposes;
  • Learners of English as a second language.

CERTIFICATE After taking TIE, each candidate is awarded a certificate recording their 2 grades. This certificate tells candidates their level for each part of the test – oral and written – and awards them a separate grade for each section.
