English & Basketball
Play Basketball and Learn English
We offer English & Sports Academies for children aged 12 –18, based on the “Play Sport and Learn English” methodology.
Basketball-Focused Programme
Our Academies have been developed to enable international athletes to improve both their English proficiency and sporting ability in environments where basketball and the English language are experienced at a high level, on and off the court.
Integrated Basketball & English Development
This approach allows athletes to integrate high-level basketball preparation with English language learning through three complementary learning modes, organised within different structured development pathways.

All staff with ED are committed to providing students with the highest standard of education during their stay. We encourage and inspire students to work consistently and purposefully to improve in all aspects of the English language.
Our experienced teaching staff are highly qualified and thoroughly trained in their field. They remain up to date with the latest methodologies in teaching English as a foreign language and combine academic excellence with a sensitive and responsive approach to each student’s individual needs, talents, and potential.
All teachers are university graduates and hold recognised qualifications in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). They are respected for their expertise, professionalism, and dedication to student development.
Classes run from 09:30 to 13:00, with a 30-minute break at 11:00. After classes, students have a 60-minute lunch break. In the afternoon, depending on the programme, students take part in sports activities, leisure activities, or a cultural excursion. Students are expected to be ready at the designated times.
The first day at the college differs slightly from the regular schedule. Students are advised to arrive at 09:00 to allow time for any unforeseen delays, particularly if they are unfamiliar with local transport routes or timetables. At 09:30, there will be a short welcome and introduction by the Camp Manager and the Principal.
Following the introduction, students will sit an assessment test, which is used to determine their English level and ensure placement in the most appropriate class.
After the assessment, students meet again in the main hall, where a staff member will explain the college rules and provide other essential information. Students are then taken on a guided tour of the college. At the end of the tour, students are allocated to their classes and attend the second morning lesson until lunchtime.
After lunch, students enrolled in the General English programme take part in a familiarisation trip, while students on specialised sports programmes begin their training sessions.
Please note: All students enrolled in the “Play Sport and Learn English” programme must bring their training equipment on the first day.
Students participating in the familiarisation trip usually return to the college by approximately 17:00. For subsequent city-centre excursions, students staying with host families travel directly home and do not return to the college.
Students on the “Play Sport and Learn English” programme normally finish training between 17:00 and 17:30.
Students receive all English course materials and workbooks as part of the programme.
Upon successful completion of the English course, each student is awarded a Certificate of Attendance. The certificate confirms the progress achieved and the level of English attained during the programme.
Methodology
Our methodology combines structured training, practical application, and experiential learning to support the holistic development of each athlete.
Training is carefully planned to balance technical skill development, tactical understanding, physical preparation, and mental resilience. Sessions are adapted to the age, ability, and developmental stage of each participant, ensuring a progressive and safe learning pathway.
Learning takes place through a mix of guided instruction, practice-based activities, game situations, and reflection, allowing athletes to apply what they learn in realistic contexts. Enjoyment, motivation, and teamwork are central to the process, creating an engaging environment where athletes can grow with confidence.
Play Sport and learn English
The educational programme is recognised by the Department of Education and Skills in all the English-speaking countries around the world.
Basketball Courses
Athletes train for more than 10 hours per week, combining theoretical sessions, coaching, and focused work on individual technique. The programme includes mental strength development, decision-making skills, safe-play techniques, team-play skills, match situations, and video analysis.
Athletes are supported by professional coaches from leading English and Irish clubs, alongside qualified instructors and team-building specialists.
The educational objective is to provide high-quality sports education while respecting each athlete’s physiological and psycho-pedagogical development stages. All ability levels are considered, and enjoyment and engagement are recognised as essential components of the programme.

In addition to classes, students take part in a half-day cultural trip each week. These trips usually visit local attractions such as galleries, museums, sports stadiums, and other popular sites. Students travel with their group leader(s) and one or more ED activity leaders. All admission fees are included.
A full-day excursion is also included each week, typically on Saturdays. Students travel by private coach to places of interest, usually outside the city. All admission fees are included. There are no organised activities on Sundays, as many groups, host families, or friends prefer to arrange their own plans.
Evening activities are organised several times per week and may include discos, party nights, karaoke, quiz nights, treasure hunts, sports and games competitions, movie nights, barbecues, and more. Activities generally take place between 20:00 and 22:00, although times may vary depending on the activity and the age group of the students.
The activities programme allows students to experience local culture and heritage in a fun and relaxed environment, while continuing to develop their English language skills. This informal and social aspect of the programme plays a key role in improving communication skills and gives students from different nationalities the opportunity to connect outside the classroom. Boarding schools offer an alternative to the host family option for students who wish to immerse themselves fully in the school experience. Boarding provides a community-oriented way of life and is particularly suited to students who are outgoing, sporty, and adaptable. It offers a comprehensive academic and extracurricular environment designed to help each student develop their full all-round potential.
The ED campus is a self-contained community that gives students a healthy degree of independence and freedom to explore, while maintaining a safe and secure environment. Student well-being is central to our boarding provision. With a generous staff-to-student ratio, we provide 24-hour supervision and care within a happy, well-structured setting. Staff actively foster a friendly, lively, and family-like atmosphere so that students feel comfortable, confident, and supported throughout their stay.
The college accommodates residential students on-site, mainly in comfortable double or triple rooms. All accommodation provided for language school students is of high quality. Bedrooms are located close to modern wash and toilet facilities or include en-suite shower rooms. Each student is provided with a wardrobe, drawers, desk, and chair.
The catering facilities offer a variety of hot and cold meals, along with a wide selection of snacks. The dining area is open before school and during break times, ensuring students have regular access to nutritious food throughout the day.
Students attending programmes with ED normally stay with carefully selected host families. All host families are inspected and approved by our accommodation officers, who maintain regular contact with each family throughout the student’s stay. Families are conveniently located close to the colleges and many have years of experience hosting international students.
Accommodation is provided on a full-board basis, including a packed lunch from Monday to Saturday.
Students usually share a bedroom with another student of a similar age but a different nationality. Wherever possible, and unless specifically requested otherwise, there is only one student of each nationality per family.
Students typically travel to classes each day by public transport, such as bus, DART (suburban train), LUAS (tram), or Tube, depending on the location. Private transfers can also be arranged at an additional cost.
Living with a host family provides students with valuable insight into Irish or British family life. Daily interaction with host families plays a key role in developing language skills and building confidence in real-life communication.
All staff at ED are committed to providing students with the highest standard of education during their stay. We encourage and motivate students to work diligently so they can effectively improve their English language proficiency.
Our experienced teaching staff are well trained and highly qualified in their subject areas. They remain up to date with the latest methodologies in teaching English as a foreign language and combine academic excellence with a sensitive and responsive approach to each student’s individual needs, talents, and potential.
All ED teachers are university graduates and hold recognised qualifications in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). They are widely respected for their expertise, professionalism, and dedication.

Students travel to activity and excursion locations with their group leader(s) and one or more ED activity leaders.
All students are fully supervised by ED activity leaders. During the day, students participate in supervised classes, training sessions, activities, and excursions. In the evening, students also take part in a structured programme of supervised evening activities.
For added peace of mind, all students have access to 24-hour emergency assistance throughout their stay.
